The Hi-Speed Mix Tape this week brings you some goodies from the present and from the past. Italian post-rockers Larsen open proceedings with a cut from their album Play. For this release, they improvised around themes and melodies cribbed from Autechre records, creating instrumental music that is infused with a feel reminiscent of the Sheffield IDM duo, yet something entirely their own at the same time. The Tren Brothers are none other than Mick Turner and Jim White, two-thirds of Australia's Dirty Three. New York psych-rockers Oneida follow up with a moody track that channels a particularly apocalyptic vibe, which is carried on by This Heat from their 1981 album Deceit. Steven R. Smith's Hala Strana project is an outlet for his interests in Eastern European folk music, filtered through the aesthetics of drone and noise. Expo '70 (a.k.a. Justin Wright) sounds like SunnO))) if they hailed from the early seventies and were into folk rather than black metal; this cut comes from his latest album Animism. Brooklyn band the Fiery Furnaces are incredibly musically diverse; this song from their 2004 album Blueberry Boat veers between lurching hip-hop influenced beats, orchestral rock, and folk over the course of ten minutes. Ohio punk legends Pere Ubu certainly need no introduction and "Final Solution" is one of their greatest songs. Oakland psychedelic band the Gris Gris take the more sedate and particularly Californian route to musical expansion, with a strong folk and Latin influence in their music. Finally, the show closes with a slice of mid-sixties French pop from Chantal Goya, lead actress in Jean-Luc Godard's 1966 film Masculin, Féminin.

The Human Instinct's Stoned Guitar (1970).

This week's show revolves around some of the finer American rock'n'roll that has been released over the last few years. Black Mountain and the Black Angels start things off with a hefty psych influence that segues nicely into the Warlocks' tribute to Velvet Underground chanteuse, Nico. San Francisco's finest, Comets On Fire take rock'n'roll to the brink, a relentless high energy assault that never lets up. Seattle's Murder City Devils had a hardcore attitude and some great players, the likes of whom can be found today in bands like Big Business and Pretty Girls Make Graves. San Diego's heavyweights Hot Snakes sadly called it a day back in 2005, but their idiosyncratic and fast-paced take on rock'n'roll lives on in records like Automatic Midnight and Suicide Invoice. Russian Circles exist at the point where post-rock and metal bleed together, dynamic and subtle in some parts, explosive and full of bombast in others. The last word, however, is given to late 60's New Zealand legends, the Human Instinct, with a couple of cuts from their fantastic 1970 album Stoned Guitar. The group's guitarist, Billy T. K. was dubbed "the Maori Hendrix", and from this album its easy to see why; stellar effects-laden psychedelic guitar leads, infused with a massive dose of soul and expression. Anyone interested the history of New Zealand's music culture owes it to themsevles to check this band out.

A less thematic playlist this week, with psychrockers Akron/Family leading the charge. Battles, soon-to-be visitors to these faraway shores (they play Wellington on September 22nd at the San Francisco Bath House), follow up with another track from their fantastic new album, Mirrored. The show also features new music from Iceland's Múm, who have a new album coming out soon. Electrelane, Fujiya and Miyagi, Trans Am and Cul De Sac are all keepers of the Krautrock flame, from subtle sonic flourishes, to out-and-out motorik rhythms. Up next are Japan's OOIOO and Ruins; the former performing tribal psychrock with a distinct Boredoms influence (perhaps not surprising considering the presence of Boredoms drummer Yoshimi P-We), the latter a drum-and-bass two piece in this case performing a medley of fragments of '70's fusion maestros the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Chicago post-rockers Shipping News conclude this weeks programme.

This week's show focuses on some of the experimental/psychedelic rock that came from Germany in the 1970's, a phenomenon dubbed "Krautrock". Taking musicalchemical inspiration from bands such as the Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground and the Soft Machine, as well as from new musical technology, bands such as Can, Neu!, Faust and Kraftwerk created forward-thinking music that departed from the blues-based templates of their British and American contemporaries and set the foundations for a whole host of different styles: the influence of many of these bands can be heard throughout hip-hop, punk, electronic, dance, and post-rock scenes.

Setting the controls for the heart of modern experimental music, this week's edition of the Hi-Speed Mix Tape features some of the bands who are pushing things in the right direction. Gang Gang Dance, Liars, Efterklang, and Birdy Nam Nam's common thread is their willingness to try anything and have fun at the same time, resulting in a sonic freedom that positively drips from each of their idiosyncratic musics. This edition of the Hi-Speed Mix Tape features a slightly narrower focus upon American drone doom group sunnO))) and Tokyo heavy rock'n'rollers Boris, both recent visitors to Australia. Live, these bands are incredible, and in the case of sunnO))), volume becomes a purely physical sensation. Truly intense performers, the two bands have released a collaborative album, Altar, which combines their forces into a radically new direction. Also featured on the show are Japanese noise-rockers Mainliner, the cosmically sonic rock'n'roll of Comets On Fire, San Diego acid rock heroes Earthless and Dylan Carlson's Earth who, alongside the Melvins, helped to pioneer the drone doom sound.

The Hi-Speed Mix Tape is dedicated to bringing the listening audience a wide selection of new music, obscure gems, cult classics and much more, with a distinct focus on the experimental, avant, and frontier-pushing side of things. This site will hopefully provide some textual relief in the form of reviews, interviews, links to the bands as well as mp3's and playlists. The show airs Friday afternoons 3-4PM on the VBC, 88.3FM.
